CRIME BEAT: Motorist arrested after crashing into hole
A Pueblo woman was arrested after being treated for injuries she sustained in a one-car accident in Pueblo West early Monday.
Mary Johnson, 27, of 3025 Thatcher Ave., was released from Pueblo County jail on $5,000 bail Tuesday. She faces potential charges of vehicular eluding, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under suspension, reckless driving and driving without a restraint.
According to a news release by public information officer Laurie Kilpatrick, sheriff's deputies Shelly Bryant and Chuck Roldan pulled an unconscious Johnson from her car after she drove it into a deep construction hole in the 1000 block of East Spaulding Avenue.
The deputies had been pursuing Johnson at about 1:30 a.m. after seeing her travel at speeds in excess of 65 mph and weaving from one side of the roadway to the other, the release said.
"While in the 1000 block of East Spaulding Avenue, the driver turned off the head lamps of the vehicle, still trying to elude pursuing deputies.In doing so, the driver left the roadway into a hole large building about 6 feet deep. The vehicle rolled on its side, teetering on a rock. The driver was found to be unconscious, partially hanging out the window of the vehicle under the vehicle wobbles, "the statement said.
Bryant and Roldan "risked their safety to get the driver under the vehicle unstable." She was taken by ambulance to the medical clinic and was arrested after treatment for minor injuries.
Kilpatrick said Johnson was one of eight DUI arrests made over the weekend in a rural county of Pueblo.

David Martinez told Pueblo police officer Marvin Billings Tuesday that someone stole an assortment of tools from a vacant home under contract for asbestos removal by Environmental Abatement South West.
Martinez, who works for the company, said he discovered plastic covering missing from a window when he arrived for work Monday, then noticed that four hand tools, an electrical tool and a piston-driven airless sprayer were missing. Martinez estimated the value of the stolen items at nearly $1,600.

Amber Bittinger told officer Nick Martinez that she returned from a weekend out-of-town trip Tuesday to discover that a TV, a Blu Ray DVD player, a computer, a Wii system, assorted games and a diamond wedding ring were missing from her home. She estimated her loss at $4,550.

This tool is functional, but I wish the workmanship was better out of the box. The pliers act upon a set of tabs spot-welded to the band, and those welds were done crudely enough to leave ragged steel "buttons" and weld spatter raised on the inside surface. I had to polish them down with Dremel tools to avoid scoring the ring lands or catching on a ring as the piston slides through. In addition, the tangs on the pliers are stamped and formed into shape. Their surfaces are irregular and somewhat oversize, making them difficult to release from the band - especially with only one hand available while still supporting a partially installed cylinder with the other. After fighting with it on the first cylinder, I also reshaped and polished those tangs with the Dremel. Everything was OK after that. Out of the box, it deserves no more than two stars because of the workmanship -- it should go without saying that a tool that slides against the sides of a piston must be smooth. I hope the low rating causes someone to save their parts from damage by heeding my recommendations before attempting to use it. After the modifications, the tool works as designed, and deserves 4 stars.
