Council reviews quake-risk buildings policy
Tasman District Council is reviewing its policy on buildings potentially at risk in an earthquake.
Under the policy, which was introduced in May 2006, earthquake-risk buildings are listed and categorised into four groups according to the level of importance.
The council has the authority to require owners to provide an engineer's assessment of the building, and if the building is found to be a potential danger, to order structural remedial work on the building or demolish it at the owner's cost.
Council communications adviser Chris Choate said the decision to review the policy was not related to the Christchurch earthquakes.
Under the current policy, owners of earthquake-risk buildings in the highest importance category have 15 years to complete the remedial work required and up to 30 years to carry out the work, in the lowest priority cases. The council requires earthquake prone buildings to be strengthened "to at least 67 per cent of the new building standards".
In all cases the at-risk buildings are identified through the New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineers standards.
On Friday a two-storey teaching block at Golden Bay High School condemned as "totally unsafe in the event of an earthquake" was closed immediately.
A Ministry of Education spokeswoman Megan Heffield said the ministry was working closely with the school to ensure that temporary accommodation would be made available. The ministry is also reviewing the consulting engineer's assessment.
"The ministry supports schools to identify buildings that might not meet earthquake building standards set out in the building code. Where buildings are identified as not meeting requirements the ministry will provide appropriate support for the school," she said.
