A recent news story out of Milwaukee should serve as a reminder to you that these commonplace devices should be treated seriously. A man died there earlier this week as he was trying to escape an elevator that had gotten stuck.
The elevator accident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Monday in a residential building. The elevator had jammed between two of the building's upper floors. The 41-year-old man pried open the elevator doors and jumped down onto the lower of the two floors. Unfortunately, he miscalculated the fell backwards down the elevator shaft - about 118 feet.
Residents of the building said the elevators had been problematic on occasion.
Most elevators carry people up and down buildings without any sort of complications. But there are so many elevators - and so many people riding them - that an accident is inevitable at some point.
