Llanfairfechan mum 'lucky to be alive' after heart disease

A MUM-of-two has told how she is lucky to be alive after conquering a life-threatening heart disease.

Ann James, 54, of Valley Road, Llanfairfechan, was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson White Syndrome (WPWS) five years ago, which causes her heartbeat to soar and drop dramatically up to 30 times a day, often causing blackouts.

WPWS is a very rare cause of “sudden death syndrome” which results from an additional electrical connection between the upper and lower chambers of the heart. It is present in three in every 2,000 people.

In 2006, Ann underwent treatment for the disease at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor but was discharged shortly afterwards.

However, she immediately fainted as she left the hospital.

Doctors said she would not have lived to tell the story if she’d gone straight home.

“In the end I was almost getting used to the dizzy spells because it was happening so often,” said Ann, who works as a weight loss consultant for Slimming World.

“I’d be standing in my slimming class and I’d feel it. I’d be talking and then would go quiet. People would ask what was wrong and I would say I’m having a ‘tropical’ moment.

“When you don’t know what the problem is, you don’t worry so much. It went from happening occasionally to happening 30 times a day,” said Ann.

After fainting in Bangor, Ann was rushed to the Manchester Royal Infirmary for life-saving surgery that would burn off fat around the heart.

The surgery was successful and now Ann is fighting fit and free from medication.

However, Ann showed signs of the condition many years before her diagnosis. She was pregnant with her second child Michael Souness in 1988 when she fainted unexpectedly.

Despite enjoying good health, doctors were unsure what caused the incident but it was believed to have been due to having an irregular heartbeat.

It wasn’t until many years later that the condition began to threaten Ann’s life.

Since then Ann has transformed her life and dedicated her time to raising money for charity.

Now she is preparing for a trip of a lifetime to Borneo in East Asia in a bid to help raise thousands of pounds for charity. She will travel 60km over five days through thick jungle, with few supplies.
