In Production: 'A Streetcar Named Desire'
Blair Underwood To Star In 'A Streetcar Named Desire' On BroadwayThe original production, which premiered on Broadway on December 3rd, 1947, starred Marlon Brando as Stanley and Jessica Tandy as Blanche, with Kim Hunter as Stella and Karl Malden as Mitch (both of whom later starred in the movie). It was directed by theater giant Elia Kazan. Acting legend Uta Hagen and Anthony Quinn eventually replaced Brando and Tandy, and later starred in the touring production, directed by another theater giant, Harold Clurman. The photo below shows Marlon Brando holding Kim Hunter with Jessica Tandy in the foreground.
The original London production, directed by Laurence Olivier, premiered on October 12th, 1949 starring Vivien Leigh as Blanche and Bonar Colleano as Stanley (pictured below).
The first Broadway revival of the play was in 1973 at Vivian Beaumont Theatre, and starred Rosemary Harris as Blanche (pictured below), James Farentino as Stanley and Patricia Conolly as Stella.
There was another Broadway revival in the spring of 1988 at the Circle in the Square Theatre starring Aidan Quinn opposite Blythe Danner as Blanche and Frances McDormand as Stella. I unfortunately couldn't find any photos from this production, but let's just imagine that it was amazing. I mean, Frances and Blythe together onstage? Yes, please!
In 1992, another Broadway revival occupied the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, the same theater the original production was staged in, starring Alec Baldwin as Stanley and Jessica Lange as Blanche. The production was successful enough to recieve the made-for-TV-movie treatment (check out the clip below ... yes, that's Diane Lane).
premiered on September 5th 2009 and eventually toured to Washington, D.C. and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Directed by Liv Ullmann, the production starred Cate Blanchett as Blanche, Joel Edgerton as Stanley, Robin McLeavy as Stella and Tim Richards as Mitch.
Also in 2009, Rachel Weisz starred as Blanche in a West End revival of the play directed by Rob Ashford.
And later this month, David Cromer's production of the classic play will be presented at the Williamstown Theatre Festival starring Sam Rockwell and Jessica Hecht. Check back for a review later this month.

MU Libraries Book Challenge: A Streetcar Named Desire/Tennessee ...
This is the first in a pair of Williams' plays that I read. Blanche DuBois comes to stay with her sister, Stella, and Stella's husband, Stanley, in a run-down neighborhood in New Orleans. Written in 1947, the play documents the changing relationships among Blanche, Stella and Stanley, while showing the clash between Blanche, a member of the "genteel" Old South, and Stanley, a member of the new industrial working class. Stanley resents Blanche, who represents (to him) Stella's past and the "finer things" that Stella left to marry him. The action culminates in a surprising confrontation between Blanche and Stanley, ending with Stella siding with Stanley and having Blanche committed to a nursing home.
