Best Bets: Fishing good overall

Anglers including Bob Diersing – lending a hand to Chris Foust, Jr. – have been having a lot more luck with redfish by using cut baits, rather than live. Those Roman noses on reds can track the scent of a cut herring, pinfish, ladyfish or mullet like a bloodhound. And the underslung jaws of a red naturally pick up a morsel off the bottom more readily than chasing a frisky live bait, particularly in hot water with low oxygen content. / Special to news-press.com FISH TIP: Andrew Williams’ dandy catch of a gag grouper on his Fishbuster Charter would have been nicer if it had happened between Sept. 16 and Nov. 15. That’s when the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council and Florida will reopen gag harvest in federal and state waters. Anglers on recreational and charter boats will be allowed to keep two gags of 22 inches or longer, within the four-grouper aggregate bag limit. Until then, fighting gags is a negative net calorie propostion. / Special to news-press.com Fishing has been pretty good overall, but all-day thunderstorms, excessive floating grass in the bays, and fish that only want to bite very early or late in the day have combined to thwart the catching end of the proposition.

Offshore anglers have had good action on goliath groupers, barracuda, and undersize cobia, but putting fish in the box has been a little trickier.

Favorable winds have produced good sight fishing for snook on Sanibel and other barrier island beaches. And summer rains running out of Caloosahatchee creeks are producing good casting for linesides up the river.

Anglers going down and dirty with cut bait have had the greatest success with redfish.

Snapper have been biting in the upper estuaries, but haven’t yet moved out to the Gulf passes.

Freshwater anglers still are handicapped by low water, or in Lake Okeechobee, dirty water being pumped out of the Everglades ag area.

OFFSHORE: Capt. Dave Hanson’s offshore Fishbuster Charters have been filled with grouper, although filling the box has been unfulfilling, grouper-wise. On Monday Tony and Jacob Herring caught more than 40 undersize red grouper and an out-of-season 22-inch gag, but only one keeper red, in addition to one keeper mangrove snapper and eight lanes caught while being harassed by bottlenose dolphins.

Brad and Matt Wind and friends Andrew Williams and Josh Brown caught Spanish mackerel, crevalle jacks and blue runners for bait, and then caught and released eight goliath grouper from 30 to 250 pounds, plus a 26-inch gag grouper on Saturday. The previous day, Mike Bochman, Zach Clark and Tim Lynch battled goliaths estimated at 125, 200 and 300 pounds, while also releasing 25 mixed lane and mangrove snapper.
