Often in his line of work, as he put it, "They want to come in and hit you with a bat."

But usually it's just one person with a bat at a time.

Criswell, who owns adjoining Audi and Acura dealerships in Annapolis, wants to open a Fiat outlet in Edgewater.

And at a community meeting he hosted last week, people came out swinging. Nearly everyone who spoke, and everyone I'd interviewed walking around the neighborhood earlier, was against the proposed dealership.

Here's someone who wants to sink $2 million to $3 million into a new business, hire 20 or 25 people and pay more taxes at a time the county desperately needs them.

The dealership wouldn't be out of place on Route 2, with about 60,000 cars a day going by. But one side of the property borders Virginia Avenue, and on the other side of that street is the entrance to a neighborhood.

So Criswell is not surprised the plan has drawn criticism. But he's dismayed by the tone of it, even as he says it's a loud few making most of the noise.

Criswell, 42, already runs three businesses - the dealerships and a collision center - that employ more than 100 people.

He's comfortable. When we met this week, he admitted he'd rather be on vacation than sticking around trying to get the County Council to approve the zoning change he needs for his new dealership.

There are easier ways than this to make a buck, and that's what Criswell planned when he bought the site of a former county police station at auction in 2006.

He saw the 1.1-acre lot on Route 2, for which he paid just over $2 million, as an investment property to leave to his kids one day.

He made a deal with Commerce Bank for a 40-year lease so it could build a branch. But the bank backed out after it was taken over by Canada's TD Bank. Then the recession hit.

You'd think people would understand why a commercial lot has sat vacant the past few years.

But at last week's meeting, residents accused Criswell of multiple conspiracies: He has planned all along to build a dealership, but waited till the last minute to spring it on residents. Or he really wants to get the zoning change so he can sell the lot for more money to someone who then might build a sex shop.

I know people don't trust car dealers. But some of these theories ignore plain facts and basic economic logic.
