Travel: Antigua, Guatemala in Colour » Daphne Chan Photography Blog

Last week a friend informed me about a job posting. It’s for an overseas placement for a photographer to document the work of a non-profit development agency. When I read the job description, the qualifications and experience required, it seemed like the perfect fit! This organization is looking for a photographer (check), someone with overseas experience who is culturally sensitive (um, check?), someone fluent in French and Spanish (definitely the former, maybe not so much the latter) and someone who’s a multi-tasker (isn’t every small business owner adept at multi-tasking?).

As part of my application, I decided to review some of my travel photography. I’ll be posting some of my overseas projects in the next few days. The one below is an assignment I did in Antigua, Guatemala.

Several years ago I decided I wanted to improve my Spanish. Since I’m incapable of doing anything halfway, instead of taking a Spanish class or two, I signed up with a Spanish language school in Guatemala in the town of Antigua. I also moved in with a local family to complete my immersion programme. The first few days were quite challenging as I struggled to understand what everyone was saying. However, thanks to my tutor and daily 4 hour lessons, I was soon speaking like a local. Ok, not really, but I learned enough Spanish to travel within Central America without getting lost or butchering the language.

While in Antigua, I documented the daily life of locals, particularly the presence of Mayans in the city. Part 2 of the series, in black and white, can be viewed here .
