Winter Comes Early

Constance Bay is being put on the map as a go-to spot for entertainment.

On August 4, famous guitarist Johnny Winter and Canadian talent David Gogo will perform at the Constance & Buckham’s Bay Community Centre to a sold-out crowd.

Winter is a legendary blues musician whose talent, albino skin and crossed-eyes make him an interesting spectacle. His younger brother Edgar used to perform with him, and they began their career as children on a musical television show in Houston. Since then, Winter has gone on to perform with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Muddy Waters.

David Gogo is a Canadian artist based out of Vancouver who is part of three different bands – one in Vancouver, one in Europe, and one in Constance Bay.

Yes, you read that right.

Band members Steve Wood and Julian St. Martin live in Constance Bay and perform with Gogo when he does Eastern Canada tours. They will be performing on stage with David Gogo in August.

How did the two Constance Bay men get into the David Gogo band?

“It was a bit of a fluke,” Wood said.

Wood and St. Martin used to belong to a blues band called Marty Sobb and the Mobb, and were in the audience when Gogo played a show in Ottawa seven years ago.

When a blues band performs, it’s not uncommon to summon up other artists from the audience to perform with them on stage, and Marty Sobb and the Mobb were invited up to do just that.

“What I didn’t know,” Wood said, “was that it was an audition.”

Gogo remembered his first impression of Wood, a bassist, and St. Martin who plays the organ.

“I thought to myself, ‘They are really good. Geeze, if I could only get rid of this Marty Sobb guy!” Gogo said.

After their performance, Gogo approached the men from Constance Bay and asked them if they would like to be a part of his Eastern Canada band. Without hesitation, they said yes and have been performing with him ever since.

As for how the concert came to take place in Constance Bay, a small team of musically-minded locals are to thank. One of them is the recently retired CEO of Zarlink Semiconductor Company who has always been passionate about music, and wanted to see Johnny Winter play an intimate show in an intimate town.

“There’s a lot of musical talent around the Bay,” Mandy said. “Last October, a bunch of us were sitting around and chatting, and said ‘Gee, wouldn’t it be cool if we had the David Gogo band and Johnny Winter come to Constance Bay?’ Everyone thought it was a neat idea, and we made it happen.

There are plenty of sites in Vancouver and getting around to see them all is easy. If you’re staying in the city (and you probably are) you can walk to most attractions. The Vancouver Museum highlights the growth and development of Vancouver from an outpost of fishing and forestry to a world class city. Science World is a great spot to take the kids so they can experience the interactive exhibitions and see an eye-popping OMNIMAX presentation. Adults will appreciate spending the time on Granville Island, a former dingy collection of rusty warehouses now transformed into galleries, shops, artists’ studios and home to a thriving public market the perfect place to pick up provision for a picnic.

The best place to start your visit is Vancouver Lookout at Harbour Centre. Take a 45 second ride up a glass elevator to arrive at a spectacular 360° view of the city, the surrounding communities, the harbour and the mountains beyond. On a clear day you may even see Vancouver Island.

What you notice most when you’re perched above the city is how green it is. As the city developed over the years, a large tract of forest was set aside, over 1,000 acres, destined to remain wild and serve as a reminder of whence the city originated. So began Stanley Park. Located right in the heart of the city, this green sanctuary is crisscrossed with walking trails and surrounded by English Bay and a 6 mile seawall - a lovely place for a stroll at sunset. Within the park are tennis courts, playgrounds, a miniature golf course, restaurants, snack bars and cafes, the Vancouver Aquarium, the Lost Lagoon where you can feed ducks and raccoons, swimming beaches, a pool, a miniature railroad for the kids, totem poles and a cannon that goes off precisely at 9 PM each evening.

The capital of British Columbia is located at the tip of Vancouver Island, across the Straight of Georgia from Vancouver.
