2 More Distemper Cases Found; Dogs In Jeopardy

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The holiday weekend has produced a new crisis for troubled Metro Animal Services.

Two additional cases of distemper in dogs have been discovered, which means 80 dogs not infected with the virus are in jeopardy.

MAS administrators said then that an infected Jack Russell terrier was brought to the shelter last month after a biting incident.

The dog later died while in quarantine.

Interim MAS Director Susan Neumayer said staff members who didn't vaccinate the infected dog will be disciplined.

Over the weekend, two more distemper cases were confirmed.

“It was never really an outbreak per se. We had three cases. We quickly got those cases under control but the facility is full now,” Mayor Greg Fischer’s spokesman, Chris Poynter, said.

On Saturday afternoon, Neumayer sent an email to leaders of local animal rescues stating MAS needed those groups to pull out 80 dogs and puppies as quickly as possible so the Manslick Road facility could be cleaned and dogs possibly exposed to distemper could be quarantined.

On Sunday, at 8:36 p.m., Neumayer sent another email stating only 15 of the 80 dogs were in the process of being transferred.

She wrote to the rescues that if the rest of the dogs aren't taken or provided foster homes by the end of business Tuesday, 6 p.m. MAS will be forced to take other actions, including euthanizing the dogs.

No Kill Louisville, the group Fischer rejected in its bid to run MAS, received the email.

“It's almost like we want help, but only the kind of help we define for you,” No Kill Louisville co-founder Jessica Reid said.

Reid said it's just another example of MAS mismanagement.

“It's gone from, ‘Oh we're not going to kill them' to 'Oh we need you guys to save them' to 'Oh if they’re not saved, it's basically your fault that they'll all die,’ so it's placing blame somewhere else,” Reid said.

“I know it's a very unusual time. It's the weekend. People are focused on other things. So I appreciate the work No Kill, the Humane Society and others have done, but we really need the public,” said Poynter.

Poynter said Tuesday only, the public can adopt a dog or puppy from the Manslick Road facility for $9.
