DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – It’s admirable that Tony Stewart tells it like it is, or, to be precise, how he perceives it to be. But there are limits.
Lots of what Stewart says nowadays creates the unmistakable impression that he is the maddest hatter never described by Lewis Carroll.
It’s Tony’s Wonderland, and everyone else is just along for the ride.
Stewart has appointed himself, apparently by divine fiat, as NASCAR’s arbiter of ethics and morals. Only he knows proper etiquette and, in general, it’s based on what he does being right and crossing him and whatever he does being wrong.
Last Sunday Stewart decided it was time to make a stand. Not just a stand in principle, mind you. Stewart decided he would take an absolute stand. He decided that right was right, wrong was wrong, and never, to his way of thinking, would the twain meet. Thus was he, for the first time in his career, possibly … not only Carrollian but also Kiplingesque.
It’s doubtful Stewart has read much, if any, Carroll or Rudyard Kipling. He claims not to even read Mike Mulhern.
Stewart wrecked Brian Vickers because Vickers was blocking him, and he decreed afterward that all other blockers would meet a similar fate. Blockers, in Stewart’s mind, are no different from cattle rustlers in Tombstone, Ariz., and if the law’s not going to do anything, it’s time for vigilantism.
The Chase doesn’t matter. Stewart said he’d rather miss the Chase than put up with even one more lying, sniveling sidewinder otherwise known as a blocker. They’re out of control and must be stopped. Stewart apparently thinks he’s just the man to do it, come hell or high water, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, till death do us part.
The English have a word for this: daft. Tony Stewart must be daft.
His words outperform any that could be thrown against him. It’s common for Stewart’s wounds to be self-inflicted.
