Nelson County foundation offers a free map to finding adventure

W hether you consider yourself a history buff, naturalist, architectural hound, hiker or cyclist, The Nelson Scenic Loop has a little of something for every adventurer. Comprised of four scenic byways and a 50-mile auto and bike tour that features Nelson County's bounty of natural, cultural and historic attractions, you're sure to find something to tickle your exploration fancy.

Peter A. Agelasto III, president of the Rockfish Valley Foundation, said the Scenic Loop is presented by the Rockfish Valley Foundation, a non-profit organization in Nelson County that focuses it's vision on the environment.

"The Nelson Loop complements the trails in the Valley that exist where birding, hiking and biking is extraordinary, or you can take a walk and jump into the river," Agelasto said. "It's just wonderful."

"Basically, you go on our website and print your own map of where you want to go. It's 50 miles, and you can just head out," he said.

Exploring the loop is a nice activity for people who are looking for an adventure and want to get out and have their own personal discovery without signing up or paying a fee.

"It's self-discovery for people who are looking to get outdoors," he said. "It's way of connecting with the land, and we're trying to let people know that there's something else to do out there besides shop ... it brings you back down to the earth."

The Nelson Scenic Loop extends along the valleys and flood plains carved by the Tye and Rockfish Rivers. The region's fertile soils have been used to raise tobacco and distinct apple varieties popular around the world. Today, apple orchards, wineries and breweries along the loop perpetuate Nelson's agrarian heritage, Agelasto said.

The Nelson Scenic Loop gives people the opportunity to visit local potters, painters and artists in their studios, while enjoying local food and wine in restaurants and markets.

"You might even see deer or a turtle crossing the road. It's nature, and it connects you to wild Virginia," he said.

He adds that there are also many scenic and natural wonders to see. Explorers can hike the Appalachian Trail, visit Crabtree Falls or stop at a scenic overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway, while witnessing colorful fall foliage or abundant spring floral displays.

The Tye River rises at the confluence of the North and South forks of the river, at the village of Nash in northern Nelson County, Virginia, on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The North Fork rises near the Blue Ridge Parkway at Tye River Gap and flows 8.7 miles (14.0 km)[1] east, then southeast, to its confluence with the South Fork. The South Fork also rises along the Blue Ridge Parkway, southwest of the village of Montebello, and flows east 7.6 miles (12.2 km)[1] to the North Fork at Nash.
From Nash, the Tye River proper flows generally southeastward through central Nelson County. The Piney River is a tributary of the Tye. Each forms a portion of Nelson's western border with Amherst County.[3] The Tye River enters the James River from the northwest near Norwood, adjacent to James River State Park in Buckingham County.[4][5]
Towns and communities along the Tye River include Tyro, Massies Mill, Roseland and Tye River, all in Nelson County.
