Many types of businesses need to bag and seal food, merchandise or bulk packages. A commercial vacuum sealer is a useful solution to vacuum sealing these types of products. But when buying a one, a variety of factors should be considered prior to making the final purchasing decision. For example, price, bag size, cycle time and reliability are commonly touted as the deciding factors. However, one less talked about factor is whether to purchase an external bag or a chamber-style commercial vacuum sealer.

Many businesses use an external bag machine because the machine is cheaper than the chamber style. But there are hidden costs with an external type in the form of convenience and usability, which can lead to productivity. And for commercial applications, production speed and repeatability go hand in hand. This is where the chamber style machines demonstrate their performance superiority.

A chamber-style commercial vacuum sealer produces a more reliable, consistent bag seal, which causes less rework, thus, promises higher productivity. It uses a chamber to remove air, which is critical in maintaining high production rates.. Cycle time is influenced by void volume, the portion of the vacuum chamber that is not occupied by the product to be sealed. To reduce the amount of extractable air, an operator place poly spacing boards in the chamber, which prevents cycle times from being excessive.

Extracting too much air can cause product damage during the sealing process. In response, chamber style machines have a gas flush option, which flushes the vacuum chamber with inert gas (e.g., nitrogen) after air evacuation and before sealing. This results in a bag that contains no oxygen, but is not sucked down tightly. Fragile items can be vacuum-sealed without damage using this option.

Operating a chamber style commercial vacuum sealer is no different from an external-type of machine. The operator places the product in the bag and then moves it into the chamber. Upon closing the lid, the machine cycles automatically and produces a vacuum seal. In addition, commercial vacuum sealers provide the option of single or double bar sealing. The double bar option allows for the sealing of two full-width bags simultaneously. This means several narrow bags can be sealed at the same time on the sealing bar. As with most commercial vacuum sealers, vacuum strength and heat impulse duration are separately adjustable. This allows for pre-production testing to determine the best rates.
