Flexible gas line blamed in Powell house fire

A flexible gas line present in many of central Ohio's newer homes helped fuel a house fire that killed a family pet in Powell this week, investigators said.

Officials with Delaware County's Concord Township Fire Department said lightning from a thunderstorm Monday afternoon apparently struck just outside the house, a one-story structure in the 4200 block of Vista Walk Lane.

"It looks like it came in through the gas line or heat ductwork, and, where the two meet, it caused arcing," Capt. Doug Kindell said.

Kindell said the electrical arc apparently perforated a section of flexible gas line that runs along the house's basement ceiling, turning the pressurized, gas-filled tubing into something of a blowtorch. The wood flooring above the tubing ignited in two places.

"We actually had burning through the floor in the area of that gas line, and it looks like it was being fed by the gas line," Kindell said.

The flames entered the family room, scorching walls and furniture and warping a flat-screen TV. Smoke spread through the four-bedroom house, killing a dog.

The house's owners were away when the fire broke out.

Unfortunately, investigators said, the charring visible around the bright-yellow gas line has become an all-too-familiar sight in central Ohio homes built in the past two decades.

"We get a lot of lightning strikes to this area, and, a lot of times, that (electrical charge) will follow the gas line in, or something in, and start the fire," Kindell said.

More than 50,000 lightning strikes were recorded in Ohio on Monday alone.

Corrugated stainless-steel tubing - commonly called CSST - is widely regarded as a safe, useful product.
