Geneva Media Holdings offers Principal Protection for Feature Film ...

PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 09, 2011 – During the recent mortgage crisis, banking lines of credit and hedge fund investors have severely limited funding for many future Hollywood film productions.    Both Wall Street and major banking institutions have lacked creative solutions for film collateral.  State film tax credits have helped, but one top insurance advisors now offers principal protection to both film producers and their private and institutional investors.  

Troy A. Dyer, of Chicago, IL and Beverly Hills, CA is both a  LIFE producer and FILM producer.  His company, Geneva Media Holdings, LLC, has designed a proprietary use for life insurance in order to protect  film producers, studios and those who invest in expensive film projects.  

The idea came to Dyer after reading in major Hollywood trade publications that  a Wisconsin-based hedge fund (Stark Investments)  may have sustained hundreds of millions of dollars in losses due to single picture deals, after a string of these motion pictures performed poorly at the box office under the deals struck by Virtual Studios.

Dyer states, “The key to any successful business endeavor is solid risk management, and no one does it better than the life and health insurance carriers domiciled right here in the Midwest.”  

Chicago’s AON Corporation has long offered large property and casualty policies to cover the risks of film and TV productions, while supplementing with life insurance on key executive talent.   As recently as 1999 however, casualty insurers like AIG and AXA, found the premiums collected could not sustain the losses for large funds (e.g., Destination Films' $100 million bond default sent shock waves through Hollywood and created numerous lawsuits).  Otherwise risky endeavors like feature film finance can leave investors without a penny of collateral to pay back bank loans or hedge fund investors.

Life insurance is not the same animal as property or casualty insurance.  Rather than issuing residual value insurance, performance or completion bonds, or default risk insurance on a film slate, Mr. Dyer has designed an entirely new idea for risk mitigation by using COLI (Corporate Owned Life Insurance).  It does not rely on P&C policies, which often do not collect enough premium to properly protect investors.
