Picture of safety hits home with cops on the beat
The force started handing out $6500 worth of A5 cardboard frames to all staff on July 4.
Victoria Police employs about 14,000 people, including policemen and women, public servants and protective security officers.
The frame reads: "Insert a photo of someone or something that reminds you why you should stay safe at work."
Victoria Police director of safety Commander Robert Clegg said his team came up with the idea.
"It is a very tiny part of an entire strategy we have been working on for five years," Commander Clegg explained.
"The cost of $6500 in making everybody aware (of workplace safety) and putting it front of mind at all times is a very good price to pay.
"It is one of the few issues where we can have something personal for every employee (reminding them) what's at home for them to go to."
Police Association secretary Sen-Sgt Greg Davies said the union was not opposed to prioritising occupational health and safety.
"As to whether it is the best use of that money the proof of the pudding will be in the eating," Sen-Sgt Davies said.
"If it works, it will be a success.
"If it doesn't, people will be entitled to ask why that money wasn't put into overtime to relieve stressed and overworked police officers, which is an OH&S issue itself."
The idea of personalising workplace safety has been around for several years, including in the WorkSafe campaign with the catchline "the most important reason for making your workplace safe is not at work at all".
RMIT business psychology expert and former WorkSafe Australia director of industry development John Toohey said personalising workplace safety was not new and could be beneficial for police if integrated into existing training.
He said it was important people put in high stress and aggressive situations at work like police had to be trained to identify and asses risks and know the potential ramifications.
"It's not just a question of putting a picture on their desk. It's a question of embedding it in their training," Prof Toohey said.
A WorkSafe spokeswoman said it "welcomes any initiative that encourages people to stop and think about health and safety in their workplace".
